Man charged in Long Island hit-and-run that killed bicycle rider

CORAM, LONG ISLAND, NY – Suffolk County police have announced an arrest in the case of a fatal hit-and-run crash that took place on April 6, Newsday reports.

This is an update to a previous story.

29-year-old David Hernandez of Norfleet Lane in Coram has been arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.

Investigators said Hernandez was driving a vehicle on Middle Country Road just before 11 p.m. when he hit a bicyclist who was riding east on the shoulder of the roadway. The bicyclist, 54-year-old Edward White of Coram, was thrown into the roadway where he was struck again by another vehicle, a Honda CR-V. White was declared dead after being transported to Long Island Community Hospital in Patchogue.

Police said Hernandez left the area after the crash but the Honda driver, a 32-year-old man, stayed at the scene.

Hernandez was placed on supervised release after his arraignment at First District Court was adjourned until May 18.
