QUEENS, NEW YORK, NY – A man is facing criminal charges for his involvement in a fatal car accident on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway on March 23, 2020, reports the Staten Island Advance.
Police arrested 21-year-old Galib Dervisevic of East Elmhurst, Queens Wednesday following an investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad. He was driving a Dodge Charger on the eastbound BQE near Queens Boulevard in Rego Park when the accident occurred at about 8:45 p.m. According to investigators, 35-year-old Jesse McCalip of Staten Island had stopped his Hyundai Elantra in the right lane and was trying to merge into the right lane when he was struck by Dervisevic’s car.
The Hyundai slid along a concrete wall before coming to rest in the eastbound lanes and McCalip was trapped inside the car. He was pronounced dead after being taken to Elmhurst Hospital. Dervisevic was not hurt and stayed at the scene.
Dervisevic has now been arrested on several charges, including criminally negligent homicide and reckless driving.
McCalip was a veterinary technician who was headed to work at Elmhurst Animal Emergency Hospital in Queens when the accident occurred.
