BEDFORD, NY – Connecticut resident Maribel Mota was driving north on I-684 around 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday when, according to authorities, she fell asleep at the wheel. Her 2019 Toyota Corolla then drifted into the left guide rail across all lanes on the freeway to the right guide rail. Her vehicle then flipped over, ejecting some passengers from the vehicle.
Mota and the front seat passenger sustained minor injuries in the crash, while the two passengers in the back of the vehicle who were ejected from the car sustained severe injuries. Another passenger in the back of the vehicle was not ejected from the car.
Despite the seriousness of the injuries, authorities do not believe the injuries the back-seat passengers sustained are life-threatening. The interstate was shut down until 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday while authorities cleared the scene. The investigation into the crash is still ongoing.
