NEW CITY, ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY – A teenage driver involved in a deadly car accident in Rockland County last spring pleaded guilty last week, the Journal News reported.

18-year-old Alan Mendoza of New City went before a Rockland County Court judge to plead guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide. The felony stems from a crash that occurred May 6 on Congers Road in New City. Authorities said Mendoza was driving a Mitsubishi Lancer just before 11 p.m. when he crossed over a double yellow line and collided with two other vehicles before the Mitsubishi struck a tree.

A 16-year-old boy who was a passenger in Mendoza’s car died in the wreck, while another passenger, a 17-year-old girl, was seriously injured. The teens were all students at Clarkstown North High School.

Rockland District Attorney Thomas Walsh said Mendoza was intoxicated at the time the accident occurred.  He will be sentenced May 26, 2022 and is expected to face 1⅓ to 4 years in state prison.

Walsh released a statement that read in part, “This plea of guilt by Mr. Mendoza today will hopefully allow the family of the young male victim a sense of closure.”
