Driver dies after 2-vehicle crash on State Route 109 in West Babylon

WEST BABYLON, LONG ISLAND, NY – Police on Long Island are investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that took place on Monday afternoon.

According to a news release from Suffolk County Police, the incident took place on State Route 109 in West Babylon at about 4:20 p.m.

Investigators determined that 31-year-old Kimberly Pigott of Lindenhurst was driving a 1999 Mercury Mountaineer westbound when she tried to make a left turn onto Herzel Boulevard.  Pigott’s sport utility vehicle crossed in front of a 2020 Jeep heading east on State Route 109, resulting in a collision.

The Mountaineer was hit on the passenger side and overturned.  Pigott was pronounced dead after being taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip.  The Jeep driver, 56-year-old Gilberto Diaz of Babylon, was taken to the same hospital with injuries were not regarded as life-threatening.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks.  The accident is under investigation by Suffolk County Police First Squad detectives, and anyone with further information was asked to contact the First Squad.
