BRONX, NEW YORK, NY – A man has died from his injuries after being struck by a vehicle that left the scene in the Bronx last month, according to the Daily News.

59-year-old Roberto Velez was hit by a minivan on Bruckner Boulevard near Havemayer Avenue in the borough’s Unionport neighborhood shortly after midnight on Thanksgiving Day.  Velez sustained severe injuries and was transported to Jacobi Medical Center, where he passed away last Tuesday.

Police said the driver of the minivan stopped after the crash but did not render any aid to the victim. The driver instead picked up two people who were seen on video running past Velez, and the vehicle then took off. A witness saw one of the men running toward the minivan and told the Daily News, “He covered his head right away. He got into the SUV and it sped up Havemeyer. It all happened within a couple of minutes.”

The NYPD has released video of the vehicle involved in the incident, a light-colored minivan. Anyone with information about the crash was asked to call NYPD Crime Stoppers.

Velez was struck just two blocks away from his home in the Castle Hill section of the Bronx.  Family members say he worked at a hotel, and was believed to have been on his way home when the accident occurred.
