BRENTWOOD, LI – Authorities say a woman was driving drunk with three children in her car when she crashed into a Long Island home Sunday night, according to Newsday.
34-year-old Ashley Thomas-Smith was arrested following the incident, which took place on Blue Jay Drive in Brentwood at about 6:40 p.m. Thomas-Smith was driving a Lincoln Aviator with her daughters inside, ages 4, 5 and 8. Police say she lost control of the vehicle while on a residential street and slammed into the house. WABC reports the SUV crashed into the home’s kitchen. The accident was captured on a nearby security camera.
Thomas-Smith was pinned inside the vehicle and was extricated by paramedics. She and her daughters were not seriously hurt in the incident, and were transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore. No one was inside the house at the time, as the family that lives there had gone to church. The residents of the home run a state-licensed day care there, a relative said.
Thomas-Smith, of Bay Shore, was charged with driving while intoxicated under Leandra’s Law, a measure that makes driving drunk with anyone under age 16 in the vehicle a felony. She also faces three counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
Thomas-Smith’s three daughters were released to the custody of their father at the hospital. According to the report by WABC, court documents indicated that Thomas refused to take a blood test at the scene but the court later ordered that the test be done.
