FARMINGVILLE, LONG ISLAND, NY – Authorities say a crash caused by an alleged drunk driver on Long Island has claimed the life of a young boy.
According to a report by Newsday, the wreck occurred Aug. 22 on the westbound side of the Long Island Expressway between exits 64 and 63.
Suffolk County Police said 27-year-old Travis Dickson of Brooklyn was driving a BMW when he crashed into the back of a Toyota Corolla driven by 49-year-old Bruce Koch of Deer Park at about 1:50 a.m. Koch’s 9-year-old son, a passenger in the Corolla, was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital and passed away from his injuries on Sunday.
Koch sustained minor injuries while Dickson had non-life-threatening injuries and were treated at the same hospital.
Dickson was charged with driving while intoxicated and was arraigned following his release from the hospital. He was ordered held in jail on $200,000 bond or $100,000 cash bail.
The LIE was shut down in the area for several hours following the accident before reopening later in the morning.
