5 killed in high-speed collision between 2 cars in Yonkers

YONKERS, WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY – Police say a high-speed collision between two cars in Yonkers Tuesday night left five people dead, according to NBC New York.

The accident happened in the area of Culver Street and Riverdale Avenue at about 9:30 p.m.  Police said one of the vehicles was seen on surveillance video driving on Riverdale Avenue at what was described as an extreme rate of speed.

That car slammed into a vehicle with four young men inside.  The four were pronounced dead at the scene after emergency crews extricated them from their vehicle.  The driver of the other car was pronounced dead at a trauma center at Jacobi Hospital.

Police said wreckage from the crash was scattered for several blocks in the area and called the damage “catastrophic”WABC reports that one of the vehicles was split in half.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released. Friends said the four young men who died had graduated from high school recently.

Authorities shut down Riverdale Avenue for about eight hours for the crash investigation and to clear wreckage from the scene.   Neighbors told WABC that speeding on the avenue has been a problem.
