WEST ISLIP, LONG ISLAND, NY – Police on Long Island say two women were killed in separate hit-and-run crashes on Monday night.
According to a news release from the Suffolk County Police Department, the first incident occurred at the intersection of Motor Parkway and Moreland Road in Hauppauge at about 10:15 p.m. A vehicle believed to be a sedan was headed east on Motor Parkway when it struck another vehicle, went off the roadway and hit a woman who was standing on the sidewalk.
The pedestrian, identified as 38-year-old Cherokee Fletcher of Commack, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle that hit her fled the scene after the crash going east on Motor Parkway.
The second incident took place about 15 minutes later on Montauk Highway in West Islip near Pease Lane. Police said a woman walking in the roadway was struck by a motor vehicle heading westbound. The victim, whose identity was not immediately released, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver fled the scene after the crash heading westbound.
Anyone with information on either of the two incidents was asked to contact the Suffolk County Police Department’s Major Case Unit.
