(NEW YORK, December 2019) - An electrical accident triggered an explosion at a railyard in the Bronx on Thursday, killing one Amtrak worker and injuring two others. The incident occurred at around 11:00 a.m. at an Amtrak substation that was adjacent to the Con Edison Van Nest facility at Unionport Road in the Parkchester.

According to early reports, the worker was performing work on a transformer that was supposed to be off, but wasn't, resulting in the tragic accident. The worker was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other two suffered only minor injuries.

Following the incident, Amtrak issued the following statement:

"We are deeply saddened to report the death of an Amtrak employee. The incident happened at approximately 11:05 a.m. at a substation just outside of New York City. There are reports of two additional nonlife-threatening employee injuries. Trains are being delayed through the area as local authorities respond. A full investigation is underway."
