What Is Gadolinium?
Gadolinium is a contrast agent that is injected into the blood stream for the purpose of highlighting abnormal tissue during MRI and MRA scans. When gadolinium is injected into a patient’s bloodstream, it circulates and collects in abnormal tissues, showing up brightly in the scans.
What Is the Danger?
While gadolinium has proved effective for many patients, it poses a risk to those with advanced kidney disease. An FDA warning cited gadolinium as a cause of a rare disease known as nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF).
Symptoms of NSF include:
- Hardening of the skin
- Yellow spots on the whites of the eyes
- Deep bone pain
- Scarring on the internal organs
- Respiratory problems
Since NSF is a newly discovered disease, the symptoms and treatments are not fully known. It is believed that its symptoms, when combined with other conditions, can be life threatening.
If you have suffered due to gadolinium, it is important to seek immediate medical attention.
