What Are Drop-side Cribs?

Drop-side cribs are infant beds with a “drop-side,” which lowers to facilitate putting the child into the bed, but can be raised again to restore the integrity of the enclosure. However, some drop-side cribs (specifically those manufactured by Stork Craft) fail at this task; and, in that failure, put infants at risk for serious injury or death. This significant risk of injury or even death, coupled with a recall of over 2.1 million cribs, has prompted the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (“CPSC”) to urge parents to “find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their baby.”

The CPSC Announces Largest Crib Recall in History (over 2.1M)

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission released a report on November 23, 2009 which alerted consumers to the dangers associated with drop-side cribs, particularly “Stork Craft drop-side cribs with the Fisher-Price logo.” The CPSC urged “parents and caregivers to immediately stop using the recalled cribs, wait for the free repair kit, and do not attempt to fix the cribs without the kit.”

What Is The Mechanism Of Injury From Drop-side Cribs?

A drop-side cribs become dangerous when their plastic hardware begins to “break, deform, or parts can become missing, or when the drop-side was installed upside-down, resulting in broken or disengaged plastic parts. In either situation, these problems can cause the drop-side to detach in one or more corners. When that happens, “it creates space between the drop-side and the crib mattress.” When an infant gets lodged between the drop-side and the mattress injuries can occur, and even death from suffocation. Or, if the drop-side detaches completely from the crib, other fall related injuries can occur.
