Alleged drunk driver arrested in Queens accident that killed scooter rider

JACKSON hEIGHTS, QUEENS – The New York City Police Department announced an arrest in a fatal accident that took place early Saturday morning in Queens.

According to a report by amNewYork, the incident involved the death of a motor scooter rider who was struck by a vehicle at an intersection in Jackson Heights at about 1 a.m.

Investigators said the man riding the scooter was headed west on 37th Avenue near 82nd Street and slammed into the back of a BMW sedan that was going south.  The scooter rider was pronounced dead after being transported to Elmhurst Hospital. His identity was not immediately released.

The driver of the BMW stayed at the scene following the crash.  The driver, identified as 24-year-old Jairo Ortiz of Flushing, Queens, was determined to have been intoxicated at the time of the incident.

He was arrested on multiple charges, including driving while intoxicated, vehicular manslaughter, and operating a motor vehicle without a license, registration, or insurance.
