The Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled 2 million Summer Infant Monitors due to the risk of infant strangulation by the monitors’ electrical cords. The Consumer Product Safety Commission initiated the Summer Infant Monitor recall due to seven cases of infant strangulation from the cord attached to the monitor. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the electrical cords present a danger to an infant if it is placed close to their crib.

The Summer Infant Monitors were distributed between January 2003 and February 2011 and were sold at major retailers nationwide. The products were sold in over 40 different models, including color, digital, and hand held monitors. All Summer Infant Monitors included a camera and a hand held device, with some models having two hand held devices.

Parents should Inspect the Cord Location on Summer Infant Monitors

The Consumer Product Safety Commission urges parents to immediately inspect the location of the Summer Infant Monitors, cameras and all electrical cords to make sure they are out of the reach of their infant. “I urge all parents and caregivers to put at least 3 feet between any video or audio baby monitor cords and a child in a crib,” said Commission Chairman Inez Tenenbaum, the Associated Press reports. “This simple step can save your child’s life.”

The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that parents place the monitors at least three feet away from a crib to prevent a strangulation hazard.
