What is Deep Vein Thrombosis?

Deep vein thrombosis (also known as deep venous thrombosis) a medical emergency, which essentially is characterized by blood clots in veins of the legs or pelvis. It can manifest with or without symptoms; but, when it does manifest with symptoms, it is generally accompanied by extreme pain, swelling, redness, and warmth to the touch, which is a result of the superficial veins of the leg being engorged. The main fear with deep vein thrombosis is that, should the clot become dislodged from the vein where it is in the leg, it could be carried to the longs of the victim, causing a clot there (also known as a pulmonary embolism), which is often fatal.

How does Deep Vein Thrombosis Occur?

The mechanism of the formation of deep vein thrombosis usually follows one of three paths:

  • decrease in blood flow rate;
  • damage to blood vessel wall; or,
  • increasing potential for clotting [a/k/a hypercoagulability].

In most cases, a patient’s potential for developing deep vein thrombosis can be evaluated by applying the Virchow’s triad, which is a set of three factors, which have been shown to affect the potential for clot formation:

  • rate of flow;
  • consistency of blood; and,
  • qualities of blood vessel walls.

That said, the more common factors, which put a patient at risk for deep vein thrombosis are a recent surgery, a recent hospitalization (immobility), obesity, infection, use of contraceptives containing estrogen, tobacco use, advanced age, air travel (commonly referred to as the “economy class syndrome” because it is characterized by a combination of immobility and minor dehydration; and, finally, thrombophilia (a/k/a increased tendency to develop clots).

What are the Signs/Symptoms of Deep Vein Thrombosis?

Despite the fact that deep vein thrombosis may manifest asymptomatically, its signs and symptoms include the following:

  • leg pain;
  • calf tenderness;
  • leg tenderness;
  • leg swelling;
  • leg warmth;
  • leg redness;
  • bluish discoloration of leg; and,
  • discomfort when leg is elevated.
