Two Dangerous Truck Incidents with Two Drastically Different Outcomes

Sharing the road with trucks and tractor-trailers does not create the ideal driving condition for motorists. The large vehicles are a safety hazard on their own without adding driver error to the mix. Sometimes though, it is the truck driver who makes the difference between a close call and a deadly accident.

Friday night, drivers on Sunrise Highway in Nassau County noticed a box truck randomly weaving through traffic. The driver’s actions reportedly caused the truck to go out of control, possibly hitting another vehicle before it struck a guard rail by the Wantagh train station and rammed into unoccupied parked cars in the station’s lot. The impact caused an explosion and massive fire, as not only the truck became engulfed, but the gasoline from the parked vehicles continued to fuel the flames. The blaze burned for more than two hours, as more than 150 firefighters worked to extinguish the fire. The driver did not survive and the investigation continues as to why he was driving so erratically. While Sunrise Highway was closed for a number of hours, thankfully no one else was injured during a busy Friday evening on the South Shore.

A day before the deadly truck accident on Long Island, a potentially serious truck accident was avoided on the opposite coast thanks to the quick thinking and skill of the driver. A FedEx truck was ready to descend down a snow and ice-covered road on the side of a mountain when the 18-wheeler with two trailers attached suddenly jackknifed. The truck’s rear brakes had locked and the nearest tow truck was an hour away. Instead of waiting on a potentially dangerous part of the road with no brakes, the driver figured out a way he could safely slide sideways down the mountain to wait for the tow on safer terrain. A police escort followed the truck as the driver carefully guided it down the mountain, avoiding an accident and injuries to himself and other motorists.
