The Frightening Number of Construction Accidents Involving Elevator Shafts

No one will argue that construction work is not a dangerous job. Everyday construction workers handle heavy building materials, sometimes at dangerous heights. While that may seem dangerous enough, workers forced to do their job under unsafe conditions presents an even more hazardous environment and risk of injury.

An alarming number of injuries on construction sites has involved workers falling through elevator shafts. On January 27, 2016, a man working at building under renovation in Chelsea fell down an elevator shaft from the fifth floor and landed on a steel reinforcement bar, which went through his leg and abdomen. On May 5, 2015, a NYC construction worker died after falling 24 stories through an elevator shaft into the basement of a luxury hotel. Only a few months later on August 25, 2015, a 30-year-old man at a building in Midtown Manhattan was working on a wooden platform above an elevator shaft when it collapsed, sending him four stories to his death where he was found on his back in five feet of water.

What is even more disturbing about these construction accidents is that in all three situations, the building owner or construction company had previous safety violations before the tragic incidents. They included penalties for workers not wearing a safety harness, a complaint about floors collapsing while work was going on, and a civil penalty for not proving that a hazardous violation had been corrected. If building owners and construction companies had taken those prior violations more seriously, maybe the three men would not have experienced such horrifying accidents.

The men and women who work construction deserve to be protected from injury due to an accident on the job.
