Syracuse Coach Jim Boeheim Opens Up About Fatal Car Crash

Syracuse University men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim recently agreed to his first interview since he was involved in a fatal accident on Interstate 690 (I-690) that claimed a 51-year-old man’s life on February 20, 2019. Esquire reported on September 11, 2019 that Boeheim attended a two-hour hearing in which the accident was reconstructed. His license was eventually fully reinstated.

“I came over a hill and it was pitch-black, and the other car was black,” Boeheim told Esquire. “So, I’m coming over the hill; I didn’t see it. I thought I was going to just go straight into the car, but I got around. I actually made a move—because there was nobody in the road—to get past the car. As I’m going by, the guy steps out.”

Boeheim said the 51-year-old man had gone back to his disabled vehicle to retrieve something and then tried to get back out. Boeheim went on to say that he received a letter from a man who said Boeheim saved his life by directing traffic after the crash because the man was going too fast at the time.

“You know that you did everything you could, and it just didn’t work and then somebody’s dead and it’s just terrible,” Boeheim told Esquire. “There’s no way to talk about it or explain about it.”

Boeheim also stated that he had received over 500 emails from people who said they had the same thing happen to them. According to WSYR-TV, there were three other people in the vehicle that initially crashed into a guardrail, and Boeheim struck the man while attempting to avoid the disabled vehicle. Boeheim was tested and the results were negative for drugs or alcohol.
