Woman critically injured after being struck by vehicle on Sunrise Highway in Copiague

COPIAGUE, LONG ISLAND, NY – Authorities say a driver left the scene of a crash on a Long Island highway that left a pedestrian critically injured, reports Newsday.

The accident happened Wednesday night in Copiague, at the intersection of Sunrise Highway and Bayview Avenue. According to police, a woman was hit by a vehicle at about 10:15 p.m. as she was crossing Sunrise Highway from south to north.

The victim, identified as 59-year-old Maria Hernandez Sanchez of Amityville, was rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip. She was listed in critical condition.

Investigators said the driver kept going after the crash and was headed east on Sunrise Highway. The vehicle involved in the hit-and-run was described as a gray SUV.

Anyone with information regarding the incident was asked to contact the Suffolk County Police Department or Crime Stoppers.
