YORKTOWN, WESTCHESTER COUNTY – A highway employee in Westchester County died last week after being struck by a vehicle while on the job,  reports WABC.

The victim was 28-year-old Jake Arcara, a worker with the Yorktown Highway Department.  The incident took place Wednesday morning while Arcara was on the job at the site of a drainage project on London Road.

Police said he was directing traffic while pipes were being installed at about 11 a.m. when an 88-year-old driver went through a blocked lane and hit Arcara from behind.  Arcara was pronounced dead after being transported to an area hospital.

Police were investigating whether the driver hit the gas by mistake instead of the brake.  The Town of Yorktown issued a statement saying it will re-examine its safety protocols and procedures, adding it appeared that proper steps were taken by staff at the scene.

Arcara, who grew up in Yorktown, had been working for the highway department the past three years and was engaged to be married in Sept 2023.
