RIVERHEAD, LONG ISLAND, NY – A car and a school bus were involved in a fatal collision last week in Suffolk County, according to Riverhead Local.
The incident occurred Thursday evening on Sound Avenue in Riverhead at about 5 p.m. Police said 31-year-old John A. Caputo was driving a Jeep Cherokee west when he crossed into the oncoming lane. The Jeep collided head-on with a Riverhead Central School District bus that was headed east. Shortly before the accident, police had received a report of a Jeep Cherokee being driven erratically and failing to maintain its lane of travel on Sound Avenue.
Caputo, a resident of Valley Stream, was pronounced dead after being transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center. The school bus driver, 30-year-old Ana Membreno Argueta, was taken to the same hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. One student was on the bus at the time and was not injured.
The crash shut down Sound Avenue between West Lane and Church Lane for several hours. Riverhead Police and New York State Police were on the scene to investigate.
Anyone with further information was asked to contact Riverhead Police.
