RIVERHEAD, NY – The suspect who began a police chase that ended in a crash which injured a Riverhead police officer has been arrested, according to authorities.

Alfred Cowell reportedly took keys from a home in Greenport on Tuesday and drove off in a stolen car. The owner of the car notified police, and an off-duty police officer noticed the vehicle and informed other officers.

An officer on duty attempted to pull over the vehicle on Route 48 in Southold, but Cowell sped off, reaching speeds of 100 MPH. He then headed into Riverhead. While attempting to pull over Cowell, a Riverhead police officer crashed his vehicle at Osborn Avenue, north of Reeves Avenue. The officer was injured in the accident.

Cowell was eventually caught by police on Thursday and has been charged with burglary, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, fleeing police, reckless driving, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and multiple traffic violations.
