MANHATTAN, NY – In an update to an earlier report, the police have arrested the driver who killed a pedestrian during a hit-and-run accident.
The police located and arrested the hit-and-run driver on Tuesday, August 4, according to NBC 4 New York. Joseph Chery, a 61-year-old man from Brooklyn, crashed his car into Maria Christina Villacres, 29, as she was walking home from her job at the Chelsea Whole Foods store. The hit-and-run accident occurred at approximately 5:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 2 at the intersection of 7th Avenue and West 24th Street.
First responders who arrived to assist Villacres after the collision, reported that she was unconscious and unresponsive. They rushed Villacres to Bellevue Hospital, but she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Police officers on the scene reported that Chery drove away from the accident after he collided with Villacres. Witnesses stated that Chery made a u-turn onto 23rd Street and then sped away from the scene. This information helped the New York Police Department find Chery two days after the accident occurred.
Joseph Chery has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident which resulted in death. Neither Chery nor his attorney has commented on the allegations at this time.
