Two Injured in Car Accident on Gowanus Expressway

STATEN ISLAND, NY – A car crash on the Gowanus Expressway yesterday sent two people to the hospital and delayed traffic on the the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, the Staten Island Advance reports.

Firefighters responded to reports of a crash near 92nd Street shortly after 8 pm. An FDNY spokesperson said that one person had to be removed from a vehicle.

Two individuals were sent to Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze for treatment. Their condition is unknown at this time.

One of the lanes leading to the the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge was closed due to the accident, slowing traffic in the area. The wreck was cleared later in the evening.

Car Accidents and Bridges

New York is a city defined by its semi-independent boroughs, which are linked together by a series of bridges and tunnels. Many of these public works structures are aging and under regular construction, which makes traffic conditions around them potentially dangerous — especially during rush hour, as hundreds of thousands of people across the city squeeze across them on their way to work. This can be a perfect storm for traffic collisions
