QUEENS, NY – A driver crashed his SUV into the front of a restaurant in Jackson Heights on Sunday, injuring eight restaurant patrons.

According to Queens Daily Eagle, the incident occurred at 9:20 p.m. on Sunday, July 5. The 12 Corazones Restaurant and Bar, located on Roosevelt Avenue near 86th Street, was filled with employees and diners when a 2019 Toyota Highlander drove through the outdoor seating area and into the front wall of the restaurant.

ABC 7 New York reports that eight people in the restaurant were injured in the collision. Medics transported five to Elmhurst Hospital for treatment. One of the accident victims sustained critical injuries during the incident. The other victims reportedly sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

NYPD officers suspected the 63-year-old man driving the Toyota was intoxicated at the time of the accident. However, when officers performed a field breathalyzer test, the driver blew a 0.0, indicating that he had not been drinking. The driver was released from police custody on Sunday night, but he was given a court summons.

The police have not released information about the cause of the crash.
