MASPETH, QUEENS, NY – A Lyft driver was killed in a crash involving a suspected drunk driver in Queens early Sunday, NBC New York reports.
The Lyft driver, identified as 48-year-old Mohammed Houssain, was transporting a passenger in Maspeth when the accident occurred at about 3:50 a.m. According to police, Houssain was driving a Toyota RAV4 when his vehicle was T-boned by a Ford Explorer in the area of Fresh Pond Road and Eliot Avenue.
The impact caused the ride share vehicle to collide with a brick wall. Houssain, a father of three, was pronounced dead after being taken to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center.
A 20-year-old man riding in the Lyft suffered minor injuries and was treated at Elmhurst Hospital. The driver of the Explorer was identified as 22-year-old Erik Chimborazo of Bushwick, Brooklyn. Authorities say he initially left the scene after the crash but returned.
He now faces multiple criminal charges, including driving with his ability impaired by alcohol, vehicular manslaughter, and driving without a license. Chimborazo was evaluated at Elmhurst Hospital prior to being charged.
A Lyft spokesperson released a statement that read in part, “Our hearts are with the driver’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time, and we are ready to assist law enforcement however we can.”
The NYPD’s Highway Collision Investigation Squad is continuing its investigation into the crash.
