CLINTON HILL, BROOKLYN, NY – A suspect has been arrested following a crash in Brooklyn Saturday evening that killed an infant and left three other people injured, the New York Post reports.
The incident occurred in the vicinity of Gates Avenue and Vanderbilt Avenue in the Clinton Hill section of the borough at about 6 p.m. Police said 28-year-old Tyrik Mott was driving a Honda Civic in the wrong direction on Gates Avenue and crashed into another Honda Civic at the intersection with Vanderbilt Avenue. The impact sent the vehicles onto the sidewalk, hitting a 3-month-old girl in a stroller, her mother, and a 36-year-old male relative.
The child was pronounced dead after being taken to Brooklyn Hospital. The mother was listed in serious condition at New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, while the man was in stable condition at Brooklyn Hospital. The 49-year-old driver of the second vehicle was in stable condition at New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital.
Police said Mott had been seen driving through a red light in the area prior to the deadly collision but officers were not able to catch up with him. After the crash, the NYPD said Mott tried to flee on foot and steal another driver’s car, but he was apprehended.
Mott was arraigned on charges that included attempted robbery and attempted grand larceny, but authorities said homicide charges were pending.
His vehicle was reportedly captured on camera speeding in the area of schools at least 90 times in the past four years, officials said.
