Officer Timothy Thrane, 35, was directing traffic in the area of William Floyd Parkway and Yaphank Woods Boulevard in Yaphank, where police had been conducting an investigation.

Authorities said the driver of a GMC Yukon stopped to ask Thrane a question when the SUV was rear-ended by a Chevrolet pickup truck driven by 38-year-old William Petersohn of Mastic.

The Yukon then struck the police officer while the pickup went on to hit a marked patrol car that was in the road.

Thrane was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with what was described as a life-threatening brain hemorrhage. He was in a medically induced coma in the intensive care unit Wednesday, but officials said he was expected to recover and to be able to return to work. The officer, a patrolman, is a three-year veteran of the Suffolk County Police who was previously a New York City correction officer and also worked for the MTA.

Petersohn, who was seriously injured in the wreck, was charged with driving while intoxicated and was expected to face additional charges.  Authorities said his blood alcohol content was twice the legal limit.

The driver of the Yukon was not injured.

Officials credited the teamwork and quick action of first responders at the scene with helping to save the officer’s life.
