YAPHANK, LONG ISLAND, NY – A pickup truck accident on Long Island claimed the life of a Suffolk County correction officer last week, Newsday reports.
The victim was identified as 25-year-old Candice Ogiejko of Port Jefferson Station, who had just finished her second year with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office. According to investigators, the accident occurred Wednesday night as Ogiejko was driving a Dodge Ram pickup north on County Road 101 in Yaphank at approximately 8:40 p.m. She lost control of the vehicle and overcorrected, causing the pickup to skid and crash into a corner of Old Dock Road before hitting curbing, fencing, and large trees.
The truck came to a stop down an embankment near a parking lot. Ogiejko was pronounced dead at the scene.
Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon Jr. issued a news release that read in part, “Correction Officer Ogiejko was just 25 years old and had her entire life and career ahead of her. She will be greatly missed by her loving family, as well as her extended family in law enforcement.”
The pickup was impounded for a safety check, and anyone with information regarding the crash was asked to contact Suffolk County Police.
