QUEENS, NY – Police officers arrested a man on Tuesday after he stole a box truck and crashed into over a dozen cars, killing another motorist.

According to NY Daily News, the multi-vehicle collision occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m. on June 30. 37-year-old Ramon Pena stole a box truck from Tall Boy Dynamic Moving Service Inc. He drove the truck from Richmond Hill to Middle Village Cemetery, hitting multiple cars as he fled the scene.

As Pena approached Metropolitan Avenue near Rentar Plaza, he crashed the box truck into an SUV. Pena exited the box truck and ran toward the M train station on Metropolitan Avenue. However, the police captured Pena in the train station before he could escape.

The driver of the SUV, 25-year-old Hamlet Cruz-Gomez, sustained critical injuries during the crash. Medics rushed Cruz-Gomez to Elmhurst Hospital for treatment, but he died from his injuries shortly after the collision.

No other drivers were injured in the accident, but multiple cars were damaged as a result of Pena’s reckless driving. One of the victims, 24-year-old Wanda Cordero, reported that the box truck sideswiped her Nissan Sentra and sheared off the left side mirror.

Ramon Pena is currently in police custody. He is facing charges of manslaughter, assault, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless endangerment, and grand larceny.
