QUEENS, NY – Seven people were ejected from the back of a van in a crash on the Queens section of the Belt Parkway Tuesday morning.

According to media reports, the crash occurred at around 3:30 a.m. when a Jamaica Moving and Storage van overturned on the Belt Parkway near 84th Street. The rear doors broke open during the crash, ejecting seven people who were sitting on the floorboards onto the highway. Some of the occupants were thrown into the woods nearby.

First responders rushed to the scene of the crash. Three people were reportedly in critical condition and were transported to Jamaica Hospital. Another victim, a teenager, was taken to Long Island Jewish Hospital with severe injuries.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash. Early reports from NYPD’s 106th Precinct indicate that investigators believe the van was traveling at high speeds just before the crash.

The incident is still under investigation. We will continue to monitor this story for any further details and developments.

Moving Van Accidents: By the Numbers

Millions of workers across the U.S. are required to ride in vehicles as a condition of their employment. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of work-related deaths in the United States.”

Whether they are required to drive as part of their duties or merely on occasion, an on-the-job crash could happen to any employee behind the wheel. Those who are required to drive or ride in moving vans, however, are at a particularly high risk of being severely injured or killed in a crash. In fact, delivery and moving vans comprise 11% of all roadway fatalities, according to the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that nearly 3,000 workers died in work-related crashes on public roads in 2017 — roughly a quarter of all work-related deaths.
