HOLTSVILLE, LONG ISLAND, NY – Authorities said a driver being pursued by police caused a fatal collision on Long Island Tuesday night, according to WCBS.
The incident began when Suffolk County police officers attempted a traffic stop on a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck after spotting it with stolen license plates at Long Island Avenue and Gazebo Lane. Police said the Tacoma driver, 50-year-old Robert Hengeveld of Blue Point, failed to stop and took off.
As police pursued him, Hengeveld’s vehicle collided with a Honda Civic at North Ocean Avenue and Express Drive South in Holtsville at about 11:40 p.m.
The driver of the Civic, 19-year-old Starlin Diaz Felipe of Medford, was pronounced dead. Hengeveld sustained minor injuries, while a female passenger in his vehicle was seriously injured and taken to Stony Brook University Hospital.
Hengeveld was arrested after trying to flee on foot and now faces multiple charges, including reckless driving and unlawfully fleeing a police officer. Police determined that the pickup truck Hengeveld was driving had been stolen.
North Ocean Avenue was shut down in both directions for the crash investigation.
