BALDWIN, LONG ISLAND, NY – Authorities were on the scene of a fatal railroad accident in Nassau County, Long Island on Sunday evening, according to a report by Newsday.
A person was fatally struck by a Long Island Rail Road train in the vicinity of Grand Avenue and Sunrise Highway in Baldwin at about 5:30 p.m., officials said.
The identity of the victim was not immediately released. Police with the Metropolitan Transit Authority are now trying to determine why the person was on the tracks at the time.
The incident disrupted LIRR service, as the Babylon Branch was temporarily shut down in both directions while the investigation was ongoing. Trains bypassed the Baldwin station as the scene was being cleared.
Full LIRR service was restored about three hours later. The accident also delayed trains in and out of Manhattan’s Penn Station for at least an hour.
