BROOKLYN, NY – A car accident in East Flatbush on Tuesday left one teenager dead and two others injured.
Police say the incident occurred at the intersection of Avenue D and Kings Highway, when the 19-year-old driver of a Mercedes-Benz lost control of the vehicle while riding along the service road. The car struck a tree on the median strip, then crashed into a parked car.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A 16-year-old passenger was taken to Brookdale Hospital in critical condition, while a 19-year-old passenger suffered only minor injuries and was treated at NYC Health and Hospitals Kings County.
Passengers and Reckless Driving
Drivers have a responsibility towards everyone on the road — including the passengers in their own vehicle. When they behave recklessly behind the wheel, they put everyone at risk. And when that behavior results in an accident, they’re responsible for the expenses they’ve caused, including:
- Medical bills
- Cost of future treatment
- Lost wages
- Emotional trauma
If you’ve been injured in a car accident while a friend or family member was at the wheel, you may feel reluctant to bring a lawsuit against a loved one. But it’s important to remember that the money recovered in such a suit will not come from the driver, but rather from their insurance company. Drivers are legally obligated to carry insurance for exactly this reason.
