STATEN ISLAND, NY – A pedestrian struck by a vehicle on Staten Island Friday morning died in an ambulance crash on the way to the hospital, police said.

According to the Staten Island Advance, the initial accident took place in the area of Jewett Avenue and Keibert Court in Westerleigh. The pedestrian, a 35-year-old woman, was hit by a Dodge Charger and critically injured as she was crossing the street on Jewett Avenue at about 6:15 a.m.

An ambulance responded to the scene to transport the woman.  As the ambulance traveled on Maine Avenue, it collided with a Jeep SUV and flipped onto its side.  The pedestrian who had been struck was pronounced dead after being taken to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton.

Three EMS workers in the ambulance were seriously injured and transported to the same hospital. The driver of the Jeep was taken to Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze with injuries that were serious but not life-threatening.

The incident shut down Jewett Avenue from College Avenue to The Boulevard while the scene was being cleared.
