MIDDLE ISLAND, LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK – A young man has pleaded guilty in connection with a 2019 car crash that killed three people on Long Island, according to Newsday.
19-year-old Nahriek Belford of Bellport appeared in a Suffolk County courtroom on Thursday, entering the plea to charges of manslaughter and felony assault. The incident took place on Feb. 9, 2019 in Middle Island.
Authorities said Belford was driving a stolen Nissan Rogue when a police officer attempted to pull him over for going through a stop sign.
Belford, then 17, took off and drove through red lights as he reached speeds of over 100 miles an hour while fleeing from police on Route 25, according to prosecutors. His car slammed into a Honda CRV that was making a left turn on Birchwood Park Drive. Both people in the Honda were killed, 74-year-old Jerome Weingarten and his wife, 71-year-old Randee Weingarten, both residents of Middle Island.
A passenger in the Nissan, Belford’s 19-year-old brother Angelo, was also killed in the wreck. Another passenger, a 16-year-old boy, was seriously injured.
Nahriek Belford is scheduled to be sentenced on March 25. The judge in the case said he intends to sentence him to eight years in prison.
