QUEENS, NEW YORK – The Queens District Attorney’s Office announced that a man has been sentenced to prison for a fatal accident that occurred on Dec. 9, 2020.
According to WNBC, 36-year-old Jason Bical of Brooklyn was sentenced to five to 15 years after pleading guilty in November to a charge of aggravated vehicular manslaughter.
The accident happened on the Belt Parkway near 131st Street at about 12:45 a.m. Prosecutors said Bical was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu westbound at about 92 miles per hour when he struck a motorist who had stopped for a minor accident.
The victim, 63-year-old Taher Ali Hassan of Brooklyn, was pronounced dead after being transported to an area hospital.
Blood alcohol tests later revealed that Bical’s blood alcohol content was twice the legal limit, and that he also had cocaine and marijuana in his system at the time.
“This defendant admitted he was driving at almost double the speed limit while intoxicated with drugs and alcohol,” said Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz. “He already had two prior Driving While Ability Impaired by Alcohol convictions from Brooklyn and should never have been behind the wheel.”
