BROOKLYN, NY – A driver who pleaded guilty in connection with a crash that killed a motorcyclist in Brooklyn has been sentenced to prison, according to WNBC.
26-year-old Christopher Diaz was given a sentence of 3 1/2 to 10 years behind bars. Diaz was driving an Infiniti sedan when the accident took place May 27, 2019 shortly before 4 a.m.
Prosecutors said Diaz was driving on Ocean Parkway in the Kensington section when he collided with a motorcyclist who was making a turn onto Beverly Road. The motorcyclist, 28-year-old Evvon Alexander, was pronounced dead at Maimonides Hospital.
Diaz was accused of driving under the influence of alcohol and driving at over 80 miles an hour in a 25 mile an hour zone when the crash occurred.
The car was registered to Diaz’s girlfriend, and prosecutors said Diaz and his two passengers initially tried to claim she had been driving at the time. But the passengers later admitted it had been Diaz who was behind the wheel and that he had asked them to lie.
“A thorough and comprehensive investigation by my Office showed that these defendants allegedly lied to police in order to help the driver of this vehicle to escape justice for slamming into a law-abiding motorcyclist and killing him,” said Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez.
Diaz pleaded guilty last month to second-degree manslaughter and impaired driving charges.
