NASSAU COUNTY, LONG ISLAND – A jury on Long Island found a man guilty of multiple charges in connection with a car accident on December 18, 2020, Newsday reports.

Authorities said 50-year-old Lumumba Woods was driving drunk when the crash took place on Sunrise Highway near Wantagh State Parkway in Nassau County.

According to Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly, Woods sped past a car in his SUV, hit a median, went across several travel lanes and flipped his vehicle.

A 58-year-old female passenger was thrown about 20 feet from the SUV and ended up being paralyzed from the chest down.

“The victim suffered catastrophic injuries and is still unable to talk or walk, two years after the crash, due to this defendant’s reckless actions,” said Donnelly. “Mr. Woods, who was one-and-a-half times the legal limit for alcohol, endangered every person on the road that evening.”

Woods, of Manhattan, was found guilty after a week-long trial of second-degree assault, second-degree vehicular assault and two counts of driving while intoxicated.

He will be sentenced on Jan. 17, and faces up to seven years in prison.
