MANHATTAN, NEW YORK, NY – A scooter rider died after being struck by an SUV on the East Side of Manhattan Sunday night, according to the Daily News.
Police and paramedics responded to the scene on First Avenue near East 48th Street at about 11:15 p.m. An investigation determined that 22-year-old Andreas Marinos was riding a Revel scooter north on First Avenue when he fell off the vehicle and landed in the street. At that point Marinos was hit by a Toyota Highlander SUV. Marinos was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The SUV driver, a 44-year-old man, stayed at the scene and was then taken into custody. Police said he was intoxicated at the time of the crash, though no charges were immediately filed.
There was no word on whether Marinos was wearing a helmet as required by New York City law and Revel policy. Relatives said he had just received his driver’s license one week prior to the accident.
The victim lived on the Upper East Side and was a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
