Man charged with DWI in crash that injured Long Island police officer

MELVILLE, LONG ISLAND – A man is under arrest in connection with a car crash on Long Island that injured a police officer, according to a report by LongIsland.com.

The accident happened Sunday morning on the westbound Long Island Expressway in Melville.  Police said a marked Suffolk County Police Highway Patrol was parked along the side of the LIE near exit 49 while processing a previous motor vehicle accident that had occurred at the scene.

At about 4:38 a.m., the patrol vehicle was struck by a 2018 Honda Accord after the car’s driver veered off the roadway.  The police officer sustained injuries that were not life-threatening, and was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment.

The driver of the Honda, identified as 33-year-old Kushal Dilawri of Hicksville, was not injured.  Dilawri was arrested following the crash on a charge of driving while intoxicated.  He was held at the Suffolk County Police Second Precinct for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip.
