QUEENS, NEW YORK, NY – A man is facing criminal charges in connection with a car accident that killed a mother and her daughter in Queens last weekend, the Daily News reports.
42-year-old Tyrone Absolam was arrested following the crash near John F. Kennedy Airport in Springfield Gardens Saturday at about 8:45 p.m. Authorities said Absolam was driving a Nissan Altima at a high rate of speed when he crashed into a Chevrolet Cruze making a turn from Rockaway Boulevard onto Guy R. Brewer Boulevard.
The driver of the Cruze, 31-year-old Diana Granobles, and her 10-year-old daughter, were transported to Jamaica Hospital where they were pronounced dead. The victims were residents of Copiague, Long Island.
Absolam and a 38-year-old woman who was his front-seat passenger were taken to the same hospital with critical injuries. A 16-year-old girl and 12-year-old boy in the back seat were hospitalized in serious but stable condition.
Prosecutors said Absolam was intoxicated at the time of the crash and failed two field sobriety tests. They said a bottle of vodka was found in his car. He faces multiple charges, including driving while intoxicated, vehicular homicide, and manslaughter.
Absolam, who was arraigned from his hospital bed on Thursday, could spend up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
