MASSAPEQUA, LONG ISLAND – Police have arrested a suspected drunk driver in connection with a deadly accident that occurred on Long Island Saturday night.

According to Newsday, 50-year-old Donnell Hill of Hempstead is charged with drunken driving and aggravated driving while intoxicated under Leandra’s Law.

The crash took place on Jerusalem Avenue near Ingraham Boulevard in Hempstead at about 10:30 p.m. Nassau County police said Hill was driving a 2018 Dodge Charger eastbound at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle.  The Dodge hit a curb and then crashed into a tree.

A passenger in the back seat of the car, 26-year-old Xavier Parris of Massapequa, was ejected.  Parris was declared dead after being taken to a nearby hospital.

Police said Hill had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, bloodshot eyes and slurred speech, and he was subsequently arrested.  He could face more charges as the investigation continues.

Hill appeared in First District Court in Hempstead on Sunday and was ordered held on $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond.
