RONKONKOMA, LONG ISLAND – A husband and wife were fatally struck by a car while walking on a Long Island street Saturday evening, Suffolk County Police said.

According to a report in Newsday, the victims were identified as Narciso and Maria Saravia of Central Islip. Investigators said the two were crossing Ocean Avenue between Express Drive North and Michigan Street in Ronkonkoma when the incident took place just before 7 p.m.

The pedestrians, who were not in a crosswalk, were struck by a 2007 Hyundai Elantra headed south.  Narciso Saravia was pronounced dead at the scene, while Maria Saravia died after being transported by ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital.  It was reported that the two were on their way to a surprise party for Narciso’s 60th birthday when the accident occurred.
