THE BRONX, NY – A rented flatbed truck rolled over on the Bronx portion of the Triborough Bridge Tuesday afternoon, spilling steel girders onto the roadway and injuring the driver and a passenger.
According to AM NY, the accident occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23rd. Two men rented a Penske flatbed truck to transport several tons of steel from Queens to the Bronx. As the vehicle exited the Triborough Bridge, the driver lost control, causing the truck to overturn and spill its cargo across the lanes of traffic.
Police officers on the scene report that both men sustained injuries during the crash and were transported to Lincoln Hospital for treatment. Their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
Road crews blocked the Bronx exit from the Triborough Bridge following the accident so they could remove the steel beams and tow away the overturned truck, causing significant traffic congestion.
At this time, the police are unsure what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. We will continue to monitor this story for any further developments.
The Dangers of Rental Trucks
Most rental truck companies will allow anyone over the age of 18 with a valid driver’s license to operate vehicles weighing up to 26,000 pounds. However, large trucks are more difficult to drive than the average passenger vehicle, especially when transporting heavy cargo. People who have little experience driving a large truck are prone to making mistakes like:
- Driving too close to other cars
- Taking tight turns
- Breaking too quickly
- Improperly securing cargo
When truck drivers do not take the proper safety precautions, their mistakes can cause a life-threatening accident.
