BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, NY – Police say an elderly patient died after an ambulance collided with a car in Brooklyn Sunday afternoon, WPIX reports.
First responders were dispatched to the scene in the area of Avenue N and Schenectady Avenue in the Flatlands section shortly after 3 p.m. The NYPD said the EMS vehicle was going south on Schenectady Avenue when it hit a westbound Nissan Maxima in a T-bone collision. The impact caused the ambulance to flip onto its side.
A 95-year-old woman with a heart ailment who was being transported in the ambulance died, but it was not yet clear whether she passed away from her medical condition or injuries from the crash, authorities said.
Eight other people were injured, including a man believed to be the son of the woman who died, along with members of the ambulance crew, the 67-year-old driver of the Nissan, and a passenger in the car. All of them sustained minor injuries.
The NYPD is investigating the accident and trying to determine which vehicle had the right of way. The ambulance was headed to Mount Sinai Brooklyn when the accident occurred.
