E-bike rider struck, killed by hit-and-run driver in Chelsea

CHELSEA, MANHATTAN – Police made an arrest in an accident Sunday morning that killed an e-bike rider in Manhattan, amNewYork reports.

The victim was identified as 38-year-old Carlos Garcia-Ramos of Washington Heights.  Police said Garcia-Ramos was riding his e-bike east on West 24th Street between 7th Avenue and 8th Avenue in the Chelsea section when the crash took place shortly before 1:30 a.m.

According to investigators, he was hit from behind by the driver of an Infiniti vehicle.  Garcia-Ramos was thrown from the bike, struck a parked vehicle and fell to the ground.  He was found there by officers and was pronounced dead after being rushed to Bellevue Hospital by EMS.

The NYPD said the driver of the Infiniti fled the scene following the collision.  The Infiniti was found parked a short distance away and the driver, who lives in the area, was placed under arrest.

The suspect was identified as 24-year-old Edgar Maeda-Luca, who was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
