BRONX, NEW YORK, NY – Police say a woman and her grandson were struck in the Bronx by a driver who subsequently fled the scene, reports WABC.

The accident happened on Monday afternoon in the Pelham Gardens section of the borough and was captured on surveillance video. A 62-year-old woman and a 2-year-old boy in a stroller were hit by a GMC Terrain Denali at about 2:20 p.m. as they walked in the area of Mace Avenue and Eastchester Road.  Investigators said the two were in a marked crosswalk with the light giving them the right of way when the accident occurred.  Both were knocked to the ground.

The driver was seen on video getting out of the SUV and checking the scene following the crash, but by the time police arrived, he was gone.  Witnesses told the Daily News the driver was looking on while pedestrians were calling 911 for help.

The woman sustained a bruised leg in the crash while the boy suffered a cut on the head.  Both were transported to Jacobi Medical Center.

The boy’s father spoke with WABC and expressed his anger toward the driver, saying “He didn’t make any attempt to stop and try to do the right thing, like any other human being would’ve done.”  He added that the boy turned 3 years old on Christmas Eve.

Anyone with information about the crash was asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline. Read more New York car accident news on our blog.
