Driver leaves scene after crash that killed couple in Far Rockaway

QUEENS, NEW YORK, NY – Police said a driver left the scene following a crash that killed two people in Queens early on New Year’s Day, the New York Post reports.

The accident happened in the vicinity of Rockaway Freeway and Ocean Crest Boulevard in Far Rockaway shortly after 5 a.m. According to the NYPD, the driver of a Dodge Ram pickup truck collided with a Nissan Rogue sport utility vehicle.

A married couple from Queens was pinned inside the SUV after the collision. They were pronounced dead later at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. The victims were identified as the driver of the SUV, 60-year-old Thelma Reid, and her passenger, 57-year-old Donovan Gibbon.

Police said the driver of the pickup truck got out of the vehicle and took off on foot after the crash.  He was still being sought as of Friday afternoon. Two passengers remained behind in the Dodge. One of them, a 37-year-old man, was injured and transported to Jamaica Hospital.

The other passenger, a 33-year-old man, was charged with obstructing governmental administration and disorderly conduct.

According to WABC, Reid and Gibbon were driving to work at Sky Chef at JFK Airport when the accident occurred.
